PATTERN NOTES

  • The granny square is worked in the round and joined at the end of each round.

  • This is worked with the right-side facing for every round.

  • You won’t be working into the stitches of the previous round, you will be working into the chain spaces from the previous round.

  • Any stitches in brackets e.g. (3 tr, 3 ch, 3tr) will all be worked into the same stitch or space.

  • An asterisk * is used to show where a full repeat of pattern will start from.

STITCHES

Slip Knot - A slip knot is not a stitch, but the first step in putting yarn on the hook. Create a loop with the yarn. Insert the hook through the centre of the loop and pull up the end attached to the ball of yarn. Pull the free yarn end to tighten the loop on hook.

Chain (ch) - Yarn over hook from back to front. Pull the hook, carrying the yarn, through the loop already on the hook. One chain is made.

Slip Stitch (sl st) - A slip stitch is used to move across one or more stitches at once or to finish a piece. Insert hook in indicated stitch or space. Yarn over and draw through both loops at once. One slip stitch is made.

Treble Crochet (tr) - Yarn over, insert hook into stitch. Yarn over once and pull back through that stitch. You should now have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over once, and pull through those first 2 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through those last 2 loops. One treble crochet is made.

Granny Cluster (3 tr cluster) - A granny cluster is just a set of 3 treble crochet stitches, all worked into one stitch or space. In this pattern, the granny clusters are separated from one another with chain stitches.

PATTERN

Foundation chain: make a slip knot, 4 ch, sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: 3 ch (this counts as 1 tr here and throughout).

Working into the centre ring, (3 tr, 3 ch) repeat 2 more times.

To join the round and create the square shape, sl st into the top of the beginning ch. This completes the first round.

Rnd 2: 3 ch, 2 tr in ch sp below, 1 ch.

(3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch) in next ch sp; repeat 2 more times.

3 tr in beginning ch sp, 3 ch.

Join with sl st into top of the beginning ch.

Rnd 3: 3 ch, 2 tr in ch sp below, 1 ch.

3 tr in next ch sp, 1 ch.

*(3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr, 1 ch) in next ch sp, 1 ch, 3 tr in next ch sp, 1 ch; repeat 2 more times from *.

3 tr in beginning ch sp, 3 ch.

Join with sl st into top of the beginning ch.

Rnd 4: 3 ch, 2 tr in ch sp below, 1 ch.

(3 tr, 1 ch) in next ch sp; repeat once more.

1 ch, 3 tr in beginning ch sp, 3 ch.

Join with sl st into top of beginning ch.

Fasten off and sew in the ends or continue working in this way to make a larger square… 3 tr in the space between groups of tr along the sides, 1 ch in between and (3 tr, 3 ch, 3 tr) in each corner ch sp.
